How evaporative cooling systems can help address heat stress

ARM Buildings’ Tim Miller explained that evaporative cooling and misting systems can help reduce heat stress when they are correctly designed, installed and controlled.

“Their purpose is to cool incoming air without wetting pigs, floors or building fabric, while maintaining effective ventilation and avoiding unnecessary increases in humidity,” he said.

Evaporative cooling works by introducing a controlled amount of very fine water into the incoming air. As the water evaporates, it removes heat from the air and creates a cooling effect. The droplets should evaporate before they reach the pigs or the floor. The aim is to cool the air, not to wet the room, Tim said.

“Evaporative cooling and misting systems are important tools for reducing heat stress in pigs, particularly in farrowing houses,” he added.

“When properly designed, supplied with clean filtered water, controlled by suitable trigger temperatures and supported by good ventilation, they can reduce room temperature and improve conditions for both pigs and staff.

“The priority should be to encourage farmers to plan ahead, install systems before hot weather arrives, and understand when water helps and when it can make humidity and heat stress worse.”
